Depression, anxiety and adverse events of antiepileptic drugs

Depression and anxiety are the most common comorbid psychiatric disorders in patients with epilepsy, but are not routinely assessed in neurology clinics. They remain often under-recognized and under-treated (21).
Depressivity and anxiety are related to both treatment response and development of adverse effects in epilepsy patients treated with antiepileptic drugs, and are associated with increased health-care costs of epilepsy (8, 32). Patients with depression and anxiety symptoms are at risk for AED side effects and poor quality of life.
The baseline psychiatric evaluation, early identification and appropriate management of these disorders should translate into better seizure control, less adverse effects and improved quality of life in patients with epilepsy (25).
