Abstract

Introduction: Back pain is one of the most common reasons for visiting a neurologist and the leading cause of impaired daily activity at a young age. Acute pain is usually nociceptive. In some patients with subacute or chronic back (cervical or low back) pain, especially in the presence of radiculopathy, despite the variety of drugs, the response is insufficient.
The pain in such patients is mixed pain, with both nociceptive and neuropathic pain components. The approach in mixed pain is multimodal – with drugs that affect different pain mechanisms.
Objective: The aim of the present clinical study is to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of multimodal approach with combination flurbiprofen and pregabalin in patients with subacute/chronic cervical or low back pain and radiculopathy.
Contingent and methods: A total of 32 patients with acute cervical/low back pain and 27 patients with subacute /chronic pain were included. The patients with acute pain without radiculopathy were treated with flurbiprofen. The patients with subacute/chronic pain and evidence of radiculopathy – with combination flurbiprofen and pregabalin. The duration of treatment with flurbiprofen was 5 days, and with pregabalin – 30 days.
Results: Reduction of spontaneous cervical/low back pain was reported in all patients who completed the study. Most patients reported more than a 50% reduction in pain. The treat ment is associated with good effect and good tolerability.
Discussion: In conclusion, the results of our clinical study show the advantages of a multimodal therapeutic approach, in which treatment depends on the specific type of pain: NSAIDs for nociceptive pain, and a combination of both for mixed pain. In particular, the results show a good efficacy and tolerability of the combination of flurbiprofen and pregabalin.
