Abstract

Migraine is one of the most common types of primary headache. There are various medicines used for acute or prophylactic treatment of migraines, but the advances in the treatment of this disease are still unsatisfactory.
Magnesium (Mg) is essential for cellular metabolism. In the nervous system, it is important for: nerve transmission and neuromuscular transmission, muscle contraction and protection against glutamate excitotoxicity. Mg blocks the calcium channel in the NMDA receptor and interferes with glutamate excitatory signaling.
Magnesium is involved in the pathogenesis of migraine by interfering the metabolism of glutamate (via NMDA receptors), CGRP, nitric oxide, serotonin. Mg deficiency has been reported in migraine patients.
In migraine magnesium is recommended for preventive treatment - a number of studies have been conducted, the results show reduction in frequency, duration and severity of attacks, reduced number of days with migraine and a reduced intake of acute medication. It is recommended to use magnesium in combination, and it is desirable to use high doses. The recommendation is level C.
