Abstract

The use of antiepileptic drugs is frequently associated with adverse effects such as idiosyncratic reactions, dose-related neurocognitive effects, and complications of long-term use (24).
The antiepileptic drugs, including those with positive psychotropic properties, can cause psychiatric symtoms. The psychiatric adverse events of antiepileptic drugs are associated with a worse course of the disease and response to treatment (18). They result from variety of factors, acting together, including genetic risks, iatrogenic factors and endogenous abnormalities associated with the epileptic disorder. The interictal depression in people with epilepsy has a chronic course and most frequently manifests as a pleomorphic cluster of symptoms of depression, irritability and anxiety (17).
Polytherapy, rapid titration schedules, and high drug dosages significantly increase the risk for cognitive and behavioral adverse effects. The early recognition and treatment of the psychiatric adverse events of antiepileptic drugs are of great importance for the whole well-being of the patient with epilepsy.
