Abstract

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation method. It can be applied either by using single pulses – single pulse TMS (spTMS) or by consecutive trains of pulses - repetitive TMS (rTMS). Various TMS protocols have been used with mixed results in a significant number of patients with headache. The aim of this article is to analyze the results from the available studies. Most of the publications investigate patients with migraine. The results from most of the studies so far show that: 1) TMS is well tolerated in headache; 2) spTMS is likely to have effect in the treatment of migraine attack (with and without aura); 3) high frequency rTMS over the primary motor cortex and the left dorsolateral cortex is likely to have effect in the prevention of migraine. There is considerably less data for the role of TMS in the treatment of other types of headaches.
